100-Word Synopsis

Sunnyside, California. A coastal city founded on Indigenous burial grounds, soaked in homicide, genocide, and three generations of herbicide. In Sunnyside, the preface warns, a black cat, a broken mirror, or a cold chill deserves immediate attention. Benjamin G. Sarno presents three linked cases that never made the official blotter: One Demon, Two Ghosts, Three Loads of Cash. Six hundred and fifty-four pages of hard supernatural crime fiction, reverse-engineered from award-winning screenplays. Welcome to Sunnyside. Be wary and cautious.

300-Word Synopsis

Sunnyside is a fictional coastal California city -- a stand-in for Oakland -- founded on Indigenous burial grounds and marked by a history of homicide, genocide, fratricide, and three generations of toxic herbicide. In Sunnyside, the preface warns, a black cat, a broken mirror, or a cold chill is not superstition. It is information.

One Demon, Two Ghosts, Three Loads of Cash: Tales from Sunnyside presents three linked supernatural crime stories by Benjamin G. Sarno. The tales were reverse-engineered from screenplays that won festival recognition. The result is fiction that reads like a record -- specific, unsparing, and grounded in the weight of real consequence.

The book opens in Afghanistan, where two soldiers -- William Johnson and Keenan Johnson -- hold an overwatch position. From there it moves into Sunnyside, where three cases unfold across 654 pages: One Demon, Two Ghosts, and Three Loads of Cash. A recurring cast of officers and civilians moves through violence, the supernatural, and the ordinary bureaucracy that surrounds both. An epilogue closes the book with the suggestion that Sunnyside is not finished.
